Gregory B. Gulliver

Gregory B. Gulliver helps technology companies develop, manage, and commercialize patent portfolios involving sophisticated electrical, communications, and software technologies. A registered patent attorney, former software engineer, and experienced intellectual-property counselor, Gregory has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in the United States and coordinated patent protection internationally. 

Before entering law, Gregory spent nine years as a software engineer with Motorola and Bell Northern Research. His work included cellular infrastructure, cable-communication systems, wireless handsets, communications standards, and network protocols. That industry experience enables him to communicate directly with engineering teams, understand inventions at a detailed technical level, and translate product innovations into effective patent applications and claims. 

Gregory’s prosecution experience spans cellular networks and handsets, wireless base stations, radio-frequency systems, digital and analog circuitry, telephony, cable modems, network protocols, semiconductors, CMOS imaging, audio systems, GPS technologies, big-data processing, blockchain, computer hardware, software-implemented inventions, and mechanical systems. He works with companies to identify protectable innovations, develop filing strategies, and build coordinated portfolios that support product development and competitive objectives. 

In addition to preparing and prosecuting applications, Gregory advises clients on invention harvesting, portfolio development, patentability and freedom-to-operate evaluations, validity and infringement opinions, licensing, patent sales, and intellectual-property aspects of corporate transactions. His M.B.A. training complements his engineering and legal experience, allowing him to evaluate patent strategy in the context of product plans, market position, investment, and commercial return. 

Gregory also represents clients in inter partes reviews, ex parte appeals, reexaminations, and patent litigation. This post-issuance experience informs his prosecution practice by providing firsthand insight into how claim language, specification support, and statements made during examination may later affect claim construction, validity, and enforcement. He uses that perspective to pursue patents designed not merely to issue, but to retain value when licensed, asserted, or challenged. 

Gregory earned his B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan, his M.B.A. from Olivet Nazarene University, and his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. He is registered to practice before the USPTO and admitted before the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.
