Eric Wait, PhD

Eric Wait, Ph.D., helps inventors and patent attorneys understand, develop, and describe complex technologies involving artificial intelligence, data science, software, high-performance computing, biomedical imaging, and diagnostic systems. With a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering, experience leading multidisciplinary data-science programs, and firsthand experience as a named inventor and scientific-software developer, Eric brings a practical understanding of how technically sophisticated innovations move from initial research to validated, production-grade systems.


At the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Data Science Institute, Eric has led a multidisciplinary team of data scientists and research software engineers delivering data, software, and AI capabilities to university researchers, industry collaborators, and federal sponsors. His work includes evaluating proposed projects, defining system requirements, developing scalable service models, and assembling the technical resources needed to implement demanding research and commercial objectives. This experience enables him to evaluate not only whether a proposed AI or software system can work, but also how its architecture, data flows, algorithms, validation methods, and alternative implementations should be described.

Eric previously served as Principal Data Scientist at Elephas Biosciences, where he helped advance cancer-diagnostic technology from research prototypes toward production clinical tools. Among other accomplishments, he developed a scanning methodology that reduced a diagnostic imaging workflow from approximately 45 minutes to five minutes while reducing data volume sixteen-fold and maintaining accuracy. He also integrated laboratory-information-management systems with cloud workflows and enterprise APIs and implemented validation and continuous-development practices for systems operating in environments subject to CLIA, FDA, and HIPAA considerations.


At the Advanced Imaging Center of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus, Eric supported more than 170 researchers across more than 50 domestic and international laboratories. He translated AI, image-processing, and computational capabilities into experimental strategies and built GPU-accelerated workflows capable of operating on systems ranging from individual laptops to high-performance computing environments containing more than 25,000 processor cores and 400 GPUs. His work on hypothesis-driven quantitative fluorescence microscopy produced a published framework for connecting experimental design, quantitative analysis, and intended research outcomes.


Eric is the creator and lead developer of the Hydra Image Processor, an open-source, GPU-accelerated library for analyzing five-dimensional microscopy data through MATLAB and Python interfaces. Maintained for more than twelve years, the software has been adopted by researchers worldwide. He also created a real-time viewer that allows researchers to compare processed results with original microscopy data and co-developed LEVER, an open-source platform for cell segmentation, tracking, and lineage analysis. This work gives Eric particular insight into explainable AI, software validation, reproducibility, system scalability, and the technical disclosures needed to support complex computer-implemented inventions.

Eric is a named inventor on U.S. and international patent filings involving label-free biological assessment, wearable robotic devices, and parallel processing. He has also co-authored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications, including work published in Nature, Bioinformatics, and the Journal of Cell Science. His experience as both an inventor and researcher helps him anticipate the information attorneys need to identify inventive concepts, distinguish implementations from intended results, and develop disclosures that account for commercially relevant alternatives.


At Divergent Patent Law, Eric supports attorney-led patent work by participating in inventor and engineering interviews, analyzing system architectures and technical literature, identifying implementation details and technical advantages, and developing alternative embodiments for complex inventions. He works with attorneys and inventors to explain algorithms, data structures, processing workflows, validation techniques, and component relationships with the technical precision needed for effective patent specifications and portfolio analysis.


Eric’s technical perspective is complemented by 21 years of leadership in the Air National Guard, where he served as a Command Post Superintendent and coordinated information and decision-making during high-stakes operations. He received the Meritorious Service Medal twice. That experience continues to inform his disciplined approach to communication, project execution, cross-functional coordination, and translating complex information for different audiences.


Eric earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Drexel University, his M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
